INCOIS Algal Bloom Information Services (ABIS) provides near real-time spatio-temporal detection and spread monitoring of phytoplankton blooms over the North Indian Ocean (0°–31°N & 35°E–103°E) to safeguard fisheries, mariculture, and marine ecosystems.

📍 Identified Ecological Bloom Hotspots

a) North Eastern Arabian Sea (NEAS) 19°N – 23°N & 62°E – 67°E

Characterized by seasonal winter-spring green Noctiluca scintillans blooms, high chlorophyll anomalies, and associated subsurface hypoxia.

b) Coastal Waters of Kerala (KRL) 8°N – 12°N & 73°E – 77°E

Monsoon coastal upwelling zone susceptible to mixed diatom blooms, red Noctiluca, and localized fish asphyxia.

c) Gulf of Mannar (GOM) 7°N – 11°N & 78°E – 81°E

Ecologically sensitive biosphere reserve monitoring coral reef health, mariculture habitats, and micro-plankton surges.

d) Coastal Waters of Gopalpur (GPLPR) 17°N – 20°N & 84°E – 87°E

North-Western Bay of Bengal coastal region tracking riverine nutrient discharge, diatom blooms, and pelagic fishery complement.
